Where it came from
Ruination first appeared as a rare card in the 1998 expansion set Stronghold, designed to punish players utilizing non-basic lands in the fast-paced environment of the late 90s. Its inclusion in the 2011 Commander product line served as a strategic reprint, catering to the growing popularity of the multiplayer Commander format where non-basic land reliance had become a dominant deck-building trend.
The card was illustrated by Greg Staples, whose dark, evocative style captured the catastrophic essence of the spell. By destroying all non-basic lands, the design creates a polarizing gameplay experience that players often view as a definitive 'reset' button. Within the Commander community, it remains a controversial piece of utility often discussed for its ability to enforce stricter deck-building constraints.
