Provenance

Where it came from

Ruhan of the Fomori was introduced in 2011 as part of the inaugural Commander product line, a series of preconstructed decks released by Wizards of the Coast to support the popular fan-created Commander format. As a member of the Fomori, a race of giants from the Magic: The Gathering multiverse, Ruhan was designed to function as an aggressive, randomized combatant. The oversized card version was included as a promotional centerpiece for the 'Devour for Power' deck, designed for players who wanted a larger, more tactile representation of their commander on the battlefield.

The art was created by illustrator Greg Staples, who utilized a rugged, textured style to convey the brutish strength and scale of a giant warrior. The design intent was to capture the chaotic nature of the Fomori, specifically the card's signature ability which forces a random attack each turn. Upon its release, the card became a cult favorite among players who enjoyed the unpredictability and political volatility the commander introduced to multiplayer games, cementing its place as a classic piece of early Commander history.
