What it does
State-based actions don't apply to you or other permanents you control. (You don't lose the game due to having 0 or less life or drawing from an empty library. Your creatures aren't destroyed due to damage or deathtouch and aren't put into a graveyard due to having 0 or less toughness. Your planeswalkers aren't put into a graveyard if they have 0 loyalty. You don't put a legendary permanent into a graveyard if you control two with the same name. Counters aren't removed from your permanents due to game rules. Permanents you control attached or combined illegally remain on the battlefield. For complete rules and regulations, see rule 704.)

Where it came from
Rules Lawyer was originally released in the 2017 Unstable expansion, a Magic: The Gathering set designed to operate outside the standard tournament rules through comedic card mechanics. The card was designed by Maro (Mark Rosewater) to provide a literal interpretation of the game's complex ruleset, allowing players to ignore state-based effects that would typically result in losing the game. Its inclusion in The List for the Unfinity Foil Edition served as a tribute to this legacy of silver-bordered humor, reprinting the card with a special foil treatment to satisfy long-term collectors of niche game artifacts.
The card's illustration by illustrator Matt Cavotta leans into the satirical tone of the Un-sets, depicting a stereotypical legal professional amidst a chaotic magical battlefield. The artwork was crafted to visually reinforce the card's ability to act as a shield against the game's systemic restrictions, utilizing a clean, bureaucratic aesthetic to contrast with the high-fantasy elements typical of the genre. Upon its debut, the card was widely praised for its clever mechanical execution, becoming a staple of kitchen-table play and a sought-after curiosity for its rule-bending utility.
