Rushing River

Rushing River was released in 2001 as part of the Planeshift expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. As the middle set of the Invasion block, Planeshift focused on the multi-colored themes central to the narrative conflict between the forces of the Phyrexians and the Coalition. Mechanically, the card was designed as a blue instant that provided flexible board control through its ability to return two target permanents to their owners' hands, offering an extra advantage if the player paid an additional kicker cost.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Daren Bader, whose work from this era defined much of the visual aesthetic for the Invasion block. Bader’s depiction of the Rushing River leans into the turbulent, elemental nature of the setting, utilizing dynamic linework and a palette that emphasizes the fluid, encroaching power of water. Upon its release, the card became a staple in various control-oriented decks of the era, appreciated by players for its utility in disrupting tempo during key moments of play.
