Where it came from
Allied Strategies was released in early 2001 as part of the Planeshift expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, Planeshift served as the second set in the Invasion block, a storyline centered on the Phyrexian invasion of the plane of Dominaria. The card was designed to reflect the set's thematic emphasis on multicolored mechanics and the necessity of disparate factions uniting to resist an existential threat.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Arnie Swekel, who contributed extensively to the visual identity of the era. Swekel’s design features a tactical, high-fantasy aesthetic that aligns with the set's focus on collaborative warfare. Upon its release, the card was viewed primarily as a niche utility piece for constructed decks relying on domain or multicolor synergy, receiving a modest reception from players looking to capitalize on the set's mechanical complexity.
