Where it came from
Ruthless Deathfang was released in 2015 as part of the Dragons of Tarkir expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to support the 'Exploit' keyword mechanic, which was central to the Silumgar brood's identity in the set's narrative. This mechanic allows a player to sacrifice a creature when the Deathfang enters the battlefield, triggering its ability to force opponents to sacrifice their own creatures, reflecting the ruthless and opportunistic nature of the Silumgar dragon clan.
The illustration was crafted by artist Nils Hamm, whose work is characterized by a fluid, painterly style that emphasizes atmosphere and shadow. For this piece, Hamm focused on capturing the predatory menace of the dragon-kin, using a muted color palette that blends the creature into the swampy, dark environment of Tarkir. The design was well-received by players for its synergy in limited and commander formats, where its ability to swing board states in the controller's favor remains a staple of black-aligned sacrifice strategies.
