Sadistic Glee

Sadistic Glee was originally released as part of the Battle Royale expansion set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, debuting in 1999. The card was designed to embody the dark, parasitic nature of the game’s black mana alignment, mechanically rewarding players for the death of their own creatures by providing a permanent power boost to another. It remains a notable example of early black-aligned enchantment design that emphasizes sacrifice and attrition as a core strategy.

The atmospheric illustration for the card was created by artist Carl Critchlow, whose work frequently defined the gothic and macabre aesthetic of the period. His depiction of a shadowy figure drawing power from a fallen comrade perfectly captured the set's intent to push the game toward more aggressive, graveyard-focused playstyles. Upon its release, it was well-regarded by players for its efficiency in decks that utilized expendable creature tokens.
