Cinder Marsh

Cinder Marsh was released in 2005 as part of the Battle Royale Box Set, a curated collection designed by Wizards of the Coast to facilitate casual, balanced gameplay between pre-constructed decks. The set revisited various mechanics and settings from the game’s early years, providing players with an accessible way to acquire iconic cards while highlighting the thematic diversity of the Magic: The Gathering multiverse through its varied art styles.

The illustration was provided by John Matson, whose work is characterized by a textured, painterly approach common to mid-era Magic cards. In designing the land, Matson sought to evoke the desolate and volatile nature of a volcanic swamp. The card was received as a functional addition to the utility land pool, valued by players for its ability to provide flexible mana support in multi-colored decks despite its potential drawback of entering the battlefield tapped.
