Where it came from
Sakashima's Will was introduced in the 2020 Commander Legends set, a pioneering expansion for Magic: The Gathering designed specifically to draft the Commander format. The card represents a strategic pivot for the blue color identity, focusing on the mechanical theme of copying permanents and creatures, a signature trait associated with the legendary character Sakashima. The set was conceived to blend the social, multiplayer nature of Commander with the fast-paced drafting experience of a traditional booster box, marking a significant milestone in Wizards of the Coast's support for the format.
The artwork for the card was created by artist Bryan Sola, who was tasked with visualizing Sakashima’s transformative abilities. The design aesthetic draws on the lore of the Kamigawa plane, emphasizing the fluid, mirror-like nature of the character's illusions. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its versatility, particularly in competitive Commander play, where its ability to equalize the board state and punish opponents who have established dominant positions proved both effective and flavorful.
