Where it came from
Sakashima's Will was introduced in the 2020 Commander Legends set, a pioneering expansion designed specifically for the Commander multiplayer format. As a card that allows a player to choose a creature they control and have all other creatures become copies of it, the design reflects the trickster nature of the legendary shapeshifter Sakashima. It serves as a tactical board-state equalizer, encouraging the chaotic and interactive gameplay for which the Commander format is known.
The card features artwork by illustrator Anna Steinbauer, who utilized a flowing, ethereal style to capture the illusory magic of the character. The design team focused on creating high-impact 'will' spells that reward players for strategic positioning and board presence. Upon its release, the card was received positively by the community for its versatile utility in blue-aligned decks, balancing high-mana costs with the potential to swing the momentum of a game entirely in the caster's favor.
