Where it came from
Salt Road Ambushers was released in 2015 as part of the Dragons of Tarkir set, the concluding chapter of the Tarkir block in the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed to explore a timeline where the elder dragons of the plane had seized power, fundamentally altering the culture and survival strategies of the humanoid clans. This specific card represents the Abzan Houses, a clan defined by their defensive, resilient nature and their ability to thrive in harsh, desert environments.
The artwork was created by illustrator Johann Bodin, who sought to capture the ambusher's role as a tactical, ground-based operative. By utilizing the 'manifest' mechanic, which allows cards to be played face-down as creatures, the design emphasizes the clan's focus on concealment and surprise. It was received by players as a functional utility card within the Limited format, praised for its ability to bolster the board state when non-creature cards are flipped face-up.
