Where it came from
Samite Elder was released in 2001 as part of the Planeshift expansion, the second set in the Invasion block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed to explore the collision of the Phyrexians with the world of Dominaria, and this card reflects the defensive, protective nature of the Benalish forces during that conflict. Mechanically, the card serves as a cleric capable of mitigating damage, fitting the white color identity's focus on preservation and healing.
The card features illustration by Heather Hudson, a prolific artist in the early years of the game. Her work on Samite Elder captures the aesthetic of the era, emphasizing the stoic, spiritual readiness of the clergy in the face of impending war. Upon its release, it was regarded as a functional utility creature within the limited formats of the time, appreciated for its repeatable ability to prevent damage in combat-heavy board states.
