Fleetfoot Panther

Fleetfoot Panther was released in early 2001 as part of the Planeshift expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the second set in the Invasion block, Planeshift focused on the multi-colored mechanics that defined the block's narrative of various planes uniting against the Phyrexian invasion. The card was designed to highlight the Green and White color identity, utilizing the 'flash' mechanic—then known as an ability to play the card as an instant—which encouraged players to manage their mana resources strategically during an opponent's turn.

The card's illustration was provided by Mark Brill, a long-time contributor to the game's early visual identity. Brill’s art captures the swift, predatory nature of the creature, emphasizing its agile stance and integration into the lush, wild landscapes associated with Green-aligned factions in the game’s lore. Upon its release, the card became a staple in tempo-oriented decks, valued for its efficiency as a creature that could surprise opponents while also allowing a player to bounce a permanent back to their hand to protect it from removal spells.
