Where it came from
Sanctimony was first released in the Seventh Edition core set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, which debuted in 2001. As a white enchantment card, it served as a reactive tool designed to punish opponents for playing red spells, reflecting the game's long-standing color pie philosophy where white often employs defensive or taxing mechanics to counter aggressive strategies.
The artwork for this specific printing was created by artist Donato Giancola. Known for his technical precision and evocative style, Giancola illustrated the card with a solemn, monastic figure that captured the essence of the white color identity. Upon its release, the card was generally viewed by the player base as a niche sideboard option, appreciated more for its thematic resonance and clear utility in specific matchups rather than as a centerpiece for competitive play.
