Where it came from
Sanctimony was first released in the Seventh Edition core set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, appearing as a white enchantment. The set, released in 2001, served as a foundational collection for the game, marking the first time the game utilized a new card frame design featuring black borders for the base set, which had previously been white-bordered.
The card was illustrated by Donato Giancola, a prominent fantasy artist known for his realistic and evocative style. The design depicts a figure in a moment of solemn reflection, aligning with the card's mechanical function of taxing players for playing red spells. It was received as a niche defensive tool, primarily utilized in sideboards to counter aggressive red-based strategies during the limited and constructed formats of the era.
