Where it came from
Sanctum of Serra was released in 2012 as part of the Planechase 2012 expansion, a set designed to introduce the Planechase multiplayer variant to a wider audience of Magic: The Gathering players. The card represents a key location within the lore of Serra's Realm, a plane defined by its connection to white mana and the benevolent figure of Serra herself. As a plane card, it serves to shift the rules of the game temporarily, reflecting the ethereal, protective nature of the realm within the mechanics of the game environment.
The artwork for this card was created by artist Charles Urbach, who was tasked with visualizing the serene yet powerful essence of the Sanctum. The design focuses on the iconic, soaring architecture associated with Serra's influence, utilizing a color palette and stylistic motifs meant to evoke a sense of divine peace and structural stability. The card was received by the player base as a flavorful addition to the Planechase format, noted for its ability to reinforce the defensive thematic identity of white-aligned decks during multiplayer matches.
