Where it came from
Sokenzan was released in 2009 as part of the Planechase Planes collection, a set of oversized cards designed to represent different locations within the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. This card depicts the mountainous stronghold of the Ogre clans on the plane of Kamigawa, a setting heavily inspired by Japanese mythology and folklore. The introduction of these cards allowed players to incorporate chaotic, shifting environments into their gameplay, simulating the experience of traveling between different realms.
The art for the card was created by Aleksi Briclot, a prolific contributor to the series who is known for his atmospheric and immersive fantasy landscapes. In designing the visual identity of Sokenzan, Briclot focused on the rugged, volcanic aesthetic of the region to convey a sense of danger and martial intensity. The card was well-received by the player community for its ability to bring unique, thematic mechanics to the tabletop, effectively blending lore-driven world-building with the established rules of the game.
