Where it came from

Sandblast was released in 2017 as part of the Hour of Devastation set, the second expansion in the Amonkhet block for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as a white-aligned removal spell that draws inspiration from the Egyptian-themed setting of the plane of Amonkhet, where the god Nicol Bolas orchestrates a cataclysmic trial for the local inhabitants.

The artwork was commissioned by Wizards of the Coast from Seb McKinnon, an artist known for his ethereal and haunting style. McKinnon utilized his signature use of light and textured movement to depict a blast of sand obliterating a target, aligning the visual aesthetic with the desolation and divine power central to the expansion's narrative.
