Provenance

Where it came from

Woodland Stream was introduced in the Hour of Devastation expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released in July 2017 as the second set in the Amonkhet block. The set centers on the cataclysmic return of the dragon god Nicol Bolas to the desert plane of Amonkhet, shifting the thematic focus from trials of combat to survival in a world under siege. As a common dual land that enters the battlefield tapped and produces either green or blue mana, it was designed to provide essential color fixing for Limited environments during a period of high-stakes, fast-paced gameplay.

The card features artwork by Florian de Gesincourt, who was tasked with visualizing the diverse landscapes of Amonkhet beyond its golden cities. De Gesincourt focused on the contrast between the harsh, arid nature of the plane and the rare, hidden water sources that allow life to persist, employing a soft, serene palette to distinguish the stream from the surrounding ruin. The piece was well-regarded for its atmospheric world-building, effectively grounding the player in the quiet, fleeting beauty of a dying world before the arrival of the final hour.
