Sandstone Warrior

Sandstone Warrior was originally printed in the Ninth Edition core set of Magic: The Gathering, released in July 2005. As a core set, Ninth Edition was designed to provide a foundational pool of cards for players, featuring a mix of reprints from across the game’s history updated with the modern card frame that had been introduced two years prior. This particular printing updated the card's appearance while maintaining its identity as a red creature centered on tactical combat abilities.

The artwork for this card was created by illustrator Pete Venters, a prolific artist known for his extensive contributions to the game during its early and mid-era development. Venters designed the Sandstone Warrior to evoke a sense of rugged, elemental endurance, reflecting the creature's mechanical focus on gaining power through battlefield experience. Upon release, the card was generally viewed as a sturdy, mid-range combatant, typical of the balanced design philosophy employed by Wizards of the Coast for their core sets of that era.
