Where it came from
Sangromancer was originally released in the 2011 set Mirrodin Besieged, designed as a black rare creature that rewards players for opponents discarding cards or losing creatures. Its design reflects the macabre, life-draining philosophy of the Phyrexians during their occupation of the plane of Mirrodin. The card's ability to gain life in response to an opponent's misfortune emphasizes the predatory nature of black mana within the game's color pie.
The 2024 Foundations Jumpstart printing features the card as number 122, serving as a functional reprint that introduces the effect to a new generation of players. The card maintains its original mechanical identity while appearing in a set designed to provide accessible, ready-to-play experiences for both newcomers and veteran collectors. It remains a notable example of synergistic design, often finding a place in Commander decks focused on resource denial and drain strategies.
