Provenance

Where it came from

Sangromancer was first introduced in the 2011 set Mirrodin Besieged, where it served as a rare black creature reflecting the infection and dark alchemy of the Phyrexians. The card was designed to capitalize on the mechanic of life-gain triggers, rewarding players for an opponent's creature deaths or discarding of cards. Its inclusion in the 2020 Jumpstart set provided a reprint, situating it within a unique, randomized deck-building environment designed to streamline the Magic: The Gathering experience for both new and veteran players.

The illustrative work for the original printing was completed by artist Igor Kieryluk, who focused on the gothic, predatory aesthetic inherent to the faction. By depicting the Sangromancer as a lean, sinister figure draped in flowing, dark regalia, Kieryluk aimed to evoke the card's theme of scavenging vitality from the misfortune of others. The design was received as a flavorful, albeit niche, utility creature that found a lasting home in Commander formats due to its potent, reactive abilities.
