Where it came from
The Sapphire Medallion was originally released in the 1997 Tempest expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed by Mark Rosewater, it was part of a cycle of five 'medallion' artifacts intended to support monocolored decks by reducing the casting cost of spells of a specific color. This cycle became a staple in the game's history, valued for its ability to accelerate gameplay and generate significant mana efficiency.
The art for the original Tempest printing was created by artist Jeff Miracola. His illustration features a stylized, glowing blue pendant embedded in stone, reflecting the artifact's elemental alignment. The card was later reprinted in the 'The List'—a curated selection of cards from throughout the game's history that appear in Set Boosters—allowing players to encounter classic, mechanically impactful designs in modern product releases.
