Where it came from
Sarkhan, Dragon Ascendant was released as a promotional card during the Tarkir block, a period in Magic: The Gathering that explored themes of time travel and dragon-centric culture. This specific version, numbered 118s, features unique alternate art designed to showcase the character's pivotal transformation and his deep connection to the dragons of the plane. It was distributed through organized play events to engage the community by offering a visually distinct rendition of a major planeswalker character.
The art captures the aesthetic direction of the set, emphasizing the high-fantasy dragon imagery that defined the plane of Tarkir. Collectors and players often favor these promotional variants because they represent a departure from the standard set art, providing an opportunity for artists to provide a singular vision of a legendary creature or character. Upon its release, it was well-received by the player base, particularly among those who valued the thematic integration of dragon lore within the game's competitive landscape.
