Where it came from
Sarkhan, Dragon Ascendant was released in the Tarkir: Dragonstorm set, an expansion centered on the time-travel narrative of the Tarkir plane. The card depicts the planeswalker Sarkhan Vol at the pivotal moment he alters history to restore the dragon clans to dominance, reflecting the set's central theme of fractured timelines and draconic rebirth.
The card was illustrated by Daarken, a veteran artist known for his dark and visceral fantasy style. The design aimed to capture Sarkhan's volatile mental state and his profound transformation, utilizing bold, sweeping colors and a sense of verticality to emphasize his ascension. Upon release, the card was received as a key mechanical and narrative anchor for the set, praised for its integration of flavor into its planeswalker abilities.
