Where it came from
Sarkhan, Dragonsoul is a Planeswalker card originally released in the Core Set 2019 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a 'buy-a-box' promotional card, it was distributed to players who purchased a full sealed display box of the set at participating local game stores. This inclusion was part of Wizards of the Coast's strategy to incentivize physical product sales while offering players a unique, alternate-art card that could not be found in standard booster packs.
The card features artwork by Chase Stone, who rendered the dragon-obsessed planeswalker Sarkhan Vol in his characteristic intense, fiery style. Designed to function as a bridge for players interested in dragon-themed archetypes, the card's mechanics lean heavily into the red mana color identity. It was generally well-received by the community for its thematic cohesion and its utility in casual formats like Commander, where dragon tribal decks remain a perennial favorite.
