What it does

Whenever you cast a noncreature spell, amass Orcs X, where X is that spell's mana value. (Put X +1/+1 counters on an Army you control. It's also an Orc. If you don't control an Army, create a 0/0 black Orc Army creature token first.)

Goblins and Orcs you control have ward 2 generic mana.

Over all his works a dark smoke hung and wrapped itself about the sides of Orthanc.

Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 2023 as part of the Magic: The Gathering 'Tales of Middle-earth' Commander set, this card depicts the corrupted wizard Saruman within the context of Wizards of the Coast’s expansive collaboration with the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. It was designed to function as a legendary creature within the Commander format, allowing players to represent the pivotal moment when Saruman fully commits his machinations to the service of Mordor, represented by his command over the forces of Isengard.

The illustration was crafted by artist Antonio José Manzanedo, who aimed to capture Saruman’s transition from the wise head of the White Council to the treacherous servant of Sauron. By emphasizing the glowing palantír and the harsh, industrial atmosphere of Orthanc, the design seeks to reflect the wizard's descent into pride and tyranny. The card was well-received by fans for its thematic integration of Saruman's mechanics, which reward the casting of multiple spells to simulate the orchestration of his vast armies.
