Saskia the Unyielding

Saskia the Unyielding was introduced in 2016 as a marquee character for the Commander 2016 supplemental set for Magic: The Gathering. Created by Wizards of the Coast to support the four-color commander archetype, Saskia was designed to bridge the gap between combat-focused aggression and the multiplayer political nature of the Commander format. The character is depicted as a brutal warlord from a war-torn plane, embodying a philosophy of shared suffering through her unique ability to deal damage to a second opponent equal to the combat damage dealt to a primary target.

The artwork for this oversized card was illustrated by Greg Rutkowski, a prominent figure in fantasy art. Rutkowski utilized his signature dramatic lighting and painterly texture to emphasize Saskia's imposing, battle-hardened aesthetic. Upon release, the design was well-received by the player base, particularly for its innovative mechanical implementation of four-color mana identity and its distinct, gritty visual identity that set it apart from traditional high-fantasy hero archetypes.
