Saskia the Unyielding

Saskia the Unyielding was introduced as a marquee legendary creature in the Commander 2016 expansion, a set specifically designed to introduce four-color commander options to the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem. As the face of the 'Open Hostility' preconstructed deck, Saskia represents the aggressive, combat-focused archetype, rooted in the thematic lore of a fierce warrior from the lands of Kephalai. Her mechanics, which allow damage dealt to one opponent to be mirrored onto another, were crafted to solve the inherent multiplayer challenge of spreading damage across a crowded table.

The card’s striking illustration was executed by artist Greg Rutkowski, whose expressive, dynamic style captures Saskia’s martial intensity and commanding presence. In the context of 2016's design goals, the card was widely praised for successfully balancing complex multi-colored requirements with a streamlined, aggressive playstyle. It quickly became a staple for players looking to explore aggressive strategies within the four-color identity, cementing its status as an iconic representative of the Commander 2016 release.
