Savage Alliance

Savage Alliance was released in the 2016 Magic: The Gathering set Eldritch Moon, the second expansion in the Shadows over Innistrad block. The set centers on the cosmic horror aesthetic as the corruption of the Eldrazi titan Emrakul infects the gothic world of Innistrad. The card was designed to reflect the chaotic, desperate nature of the setting, where disparate factions are forced to coordinate their defenses against an overwhelming, otherworldly threat.

The card features artwork by Lake Hurwitz, who utilized a visceral, high-contrast style to depict the chaotic surge of red and green energy. The design intent was to provide red-green decks with a flexible utility tool that rewards tactical positioning and the ability to mitigate or amplify damage in complex combat scenarios. Upon release, it was noted for its versatility in Limited formats, where its ability to grant haste or deal damage provided a necessary answer to the oppressive board states typical of the Eldritch Moon environment.
