Savaen Elves

Savaen Elves was released in 1994 as part of The Dark, the fourth expansion set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this set was notable for its dark, gothic aesthetic and thematic shift toward horror and folklore, moving away from the high-fantasy tropes of the base game. It was designed to add depth to the game's mechanics while grounding its atmosphere in a moodier, more melancholic world.

The card features artwork by illustrator Anson Maddocks, a foundational artist for the early years of the game. Maddocks utilized a distinct, surreal, and often gritty visual style that became synonymous with the game's early identity. Savaen Elves reflects this period's artistic intent, where cards often focused on capturing a specific, evocative moment in a fantasy narrative rather than the standardized, high-gloss fantasy art that became prevalent in later editions.
