Where it came from
Savage Conception was released in 2008 as part of the Eventide expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, Eventide served as the second set in the Shadowmoor block, continuing the theme of a world transitioning into a perpetual twilight. The card mechanic, designed to support the set's focus on color-hybrid mana and synergy, allows players to draw cards based on the converted mana cost of a target creature, reflecting the set's emphasis on utility and strategic resource management.
The artwork for Savage Conception was created by the illustrator Chippy, a frequent contributor to the franchise. Known for a distinctively textural and atmospheric style, Chippy was tasked with capturing the eerie, transformative nature of the Shadowmoor environment. The illustration depicts a stylized, surreal creature that embodies the set's aesthetic of unsettling metamorphosis. Upon release, the card was received as a niche utility piece, valued primarily by players exploring the thematic and mechanical innovations that defined the late-2000s era of the game.
