Savageborn Hydra

Savageborn Hydra was originally introduced in the 2013 Magic: The Gathering set Dragon's Maze. It serves as a prime example of the 'Gruul' color identity, utilizing the double-strike mechanic paired with a scaling mana-sink ability that allows the creature to grow larger as the game progresses. This specific iteration in Iconic Masters, released in 2017, features updated card frames and set symbols while maintaining the aggressive, high-risk, high-reward design philosophy typical of red-green deck archetypes.

The artwork for this card was created by artist Dan Dos Santos, who has contributed significantly to the visual language of the game. His illustration aims to capture the chaotic and multi-headed nature of the creature, emphasizing its power through vibrant colors and dynamic, encroaching anatomy. Upon release, the card was well-received by players focusing on casual or commander-style formats, where its ability to function as a powerful late-game threat often makes it a staple in creature-heavy strategies.
