Provenance

Where it came from

Savage Thallid was released in 2006 as part of the Time Spiral set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was famously designed to celebrate the history of the game, reintroducing mechanics and creature types from the early nineties. As a member of the Thallid tribe, which first appeared in the 1994 set Fallen Empires, this card served as a thematic call-back, utilizing the iconic spore counter mechanic that allowed players to generate Saproling tokens over several turns.

The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Pete Venters, a veteran artist for the game known for his extensive work throughout the nineties and early two-thousands. Venters aimed to capture the grotesque, fungal aesthetic characteristic of the Thallids while updating their visual presence for the more modern, detailed art style of the Time Spiral era. The card was well-received by players who appreciated the nostalgia of the design and its functional role within aggressive green creature decks of that period.
