Scapeshift

Scapeshift was originally introduced in the Morningtide expansion in 2008, designed to explore the mechanics of land sacrifice as a utility-based spell. It gained significant notoriety as a cornerstone of combo decks that use its ability to search for specific land combinations to facilitate a win condition in a single turn. By the time it was reprinted in Core Set 2019, it had firmly established itself as a staple of the Modern format, often appearing in archetypes named for the card itself.

The Core Set 2019 illustration was rendered by Daniel Ljunggren, who sought to capture the transformative, chaotic nature of the spell. Ljunggren’s design focuses on the visual representation of terrain shifting and buckling under immense magical pressure, moving away from the more literal interpretations found in earlier printings. The artwork was well-received by the player base for its ability to convey the overwhelming scale of the spell while maintaining the clarity required for gameplay.
