Where it came from
Scandalmonger was released in 1999 as part of the Mercadian Masques expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on the plane of Mercadia, a world defined by its complex socio-political landscape, pervasive trade, and hidden agendas. This card, a black creature representing a gossiping infiltrator, was designed to reflect the set's central theme of political manipulation and the weaponization of information.
The artwork was illustrated by Terese Nielsen, a prominent figure in the game's early visual history. Nielsen utilized her characteristic style to capture the character's unsettling and covert nature, emphasizing shadow and expression to convey the theme of discord. Upon its release, the card was recognized for its unique ability to force players to discard cards, functioning as a tactical tool that required careful management of the game's social and resource-based dynamics.
