Provenance

Where it came from

Scavenger Grounds was released in 2017 as part of the Hour of Devastation expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set on the plane of Amonkhet, the card reflects the desolate and harsh landscape left behind following the events of the block, where the god-pharaoh Nicol Bolas brought ruin to a civilization that had been meticulously groomed for his return. It was designed to provide players with a utility land capable of interacting with graveyards, a common necessity in competitive play.

The art for Scavenger Grounds was illustrated by Titus Lunter. Lunter sought to capture the oppressive, sun-baked atmosphere of the desert wastes, emphasizing the vast scale of the ruins and the encroaching sand. The card was well-received by the player community for its versatility, as its ability to exile all graveyards provided a colorless answer to graveyard-based strategies in formats ranging from Standard to Commander.
