Where it came from
Accursed Horde was released in 2017 as part of the Hour of Devastation set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set on the plane of Amonkhet, the card depicts the relentless, undead soldiers serving the dragon planeswalker Nicol Bolas. This set marked the climax of the Amonkhet block, focusing on themes of desolation, eternal servitude, and the subversion of ancient Egyptian motifs into a dark, dystopian narrative.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a frequent contributor to the game known for his atmospheric and emotionally resonant style. Voss sought to capture the oppressive, mechanical nature of the Horde, emphasizing their uniformity and the eerie glowing magic that binds them to their master. Upon release, the card was received as a functional, flavorful inclusion for black-aligned graveyard-recursion strategies, reflecting the set's broader mechanical focus on manipulating the dead.
