Where it came from
Scheming Symmetry, originally printed as a rare in the Core Set 2020 expansion, saw this stylized treatment in the 2023 Secret Lair drop titled 'Artist Series: Magali Villeneuve'. This series was designed to showcase the distinctive aesthetic of one of Magic: The Gathering’s most celebrated illustrators, allowing her to revisit past designs with her signature painterly approach and evocative, high-fantasy detailing.
Magali Villeneuve’s design for this card leans into her penchant for ethereal, character-focused portraiture, emphasizing the manipulative and balanced nature of the spell’s effect. By stripping away the traditional, often chaotic action scenes of earlier sets in favor of a more composed and regal framing, she sought to highlight the 'scheming' thematic essence. The card was well-received by collectors who value the integration of fine art sensibilities into the functional mechanics of trading card games.
