Where it came from
Scheming Symmetry, originally printed as a rare card in the 2019 Core Set for Magic: The Gathering, was reimagined for the Secret Lair Drop series as part of the 'Artist Series' showcase. These drops were established by Wizards of the Coast as curated, limited-release sets designed to spotlight the work of individual illustrators, allowing them to apply their personal aesthetic to classic or high-utility game mechanics.
This specific iteration, numbered 1520, features artwork by artist Johannes Voss. Known for his ethereal and high-fantasy illustrative style, Voss focused on the concept of duality and mirrored perfection to reflect the card's function, which allows two players to tutor their libraries. The piece was well-received within the collector community for its departure from traditional Magic art styles, leaning instead into a refined, almost painterly composition that emphasizes the 'symmetry' implied by the card's name.
