Where it came from
Scour was released in 1999 as part of the Urza's Destiny expansion, the final set in the Urza block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. During this period, the game's mechanics were heavily focused on the artifact-themed narrative of the artificer Urza and his conflict with the Phyrexians, with the expansion introducing powerful card mechanics that sought to finalize the set's complex internal synergies.
The artwork was illustrated by Terese Nielsen, a prominent contributor to the game who was known for her distinct, painterly style during the late 1990s. The card's design, which allows a player to look at the top card of their library and potentially put it into their graveyard, reflects the set's emphasis on manipulation and resource management, elements that were highly regarded by competitive players for the utility they provided in deck construction.
