Where it came from
Scrapshooter was released in 2024 as part of the promotional set for the Magic: The Gathering expansion Bloomburrow. The set is notable for its anthropomorphic woodland creature theme, a departure from traditional high-fantasy tropes, designed to evoke the cozy and pastoral aesthetic of folklore and classic children's literature. This specific card represents the vibrant, whimsical world-building intended to ground the game's mechanics in a cohesive, storybook-inspired environment.
The card’s illustration was crafted to lean into the 'cozy fantasy' aesthetic, emphasizing tactile details and the distinct visual identity of the Bloomburrow plane. By focusing on smaller-scale creatures utilizing scavenged materials, the design team aimed to convey the resourcefulness and charm of the setting's protagonists. Upon its release, the promotional variant was well-received by collectors who prioritize the set’s unique artistic direction and the thematic immersion provided by the high-quality character art.
