Where it came from
Scytheclaw was released in 2015 as part of the Commander 2015 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. It debuted within the Plunder the Graves deck, a preconstructed set built around a black-green graveyard synergy theme. The card was designed to support the Equipment subtype, offering players a way to turn small creatures into significant threats through its living weapon mechanic, which creates a germ token upon entering the battlefield.
The card features artwork by Igor Kieryluk, whose digital illustration style emphasizes the visceral, biomechanical aesthetic common to the Phyrexian-themed cards within the game. The design aims to capture the essence of a parasitic, bladed appendage, reflecting the ruthless nature of its source material. It has been received by players primarily as a niche inclusion in decks that benefit from equipment-based strategies or sacrifice engines, serving as a functional tool within casual Commander formats.
