Where it came from
Search Party Captain was originally released in the 2021 set Innistrad: Crimson Vow, designed as a white creature card that leverages the set's signature mechanics. The Double Feature version, released in early 2022, serves as a monochromatic, silver-screen-inspired treatment of the original card, intended to pay homage to classic horror aesthetics. It reflects the broader design goal of the set to combine elements from both Innistrad expansion blocks into a unified, high-contrast visual experience.
The artwork for this card was created by artist Livia Prima, who has contributed extensively to the visual identity of Magic: The Gathering. Her work here aims to capture the thematic essence of the Innistrad plane—a gothic horror setting—by emphasizing the tension and camaraderie among the human inhabitants. Upon its release, the Double Feature treatment was noted by collectors for its unique greyscale aesthetic, which intentionally diverged from the standard full-color illustrations seen in typical card expansions.
