Where it came from
Cruel Witness was originally released as part of the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt expansion in 2021 before being included in the 2022 Double Feature set. The Double Feature release was a unique, curated experience designed to showcase the two sets of the return to Innistrad block—Midnight Hunt and Crimson Vow—by presenting them with a distinctive silver-screen, monochrome aesthetic that paid homage to classic black-and-white horror cinema.
The art for the card was created by Aleksi Briclot, a prolific contributor to the Magic: The Gathering visual identity. His design process for this piece focused on the gothic, eerie atmosphere central to the Innistrad plane, emphasizing the tension of the subject matter through stark lighting and high-contrast shadows. Upon its release, the Double Feature treatment was noted by collectors for its minimalist, stylized departure from the vibrant colors of standard sets.
