Sea's Claim

Sea's Claim originated in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield to introduce land-altering mechanics to the game. It functions as a blue enchantment that transforms a target land into an Island, a simple but disruptive tool intended to color-screw opponents or mitigate the threat of powerful utility lands. By the time it reached the Ninth Edition core set in 2005, the card had become a legacy staple of blue control strategies.

The Ninth Edition printing features artwork by Thomas Gianni, who provided a moody, atmospheric illustration of a coastal cliffside. Gianni’s aesthetic for the card moved away from the more abstract interpretations of early editions toward a grounded, illustrative style typical of the mid-2000s design language. Ninth Edition was notable for being the first core set to utilize the modern card frame, which gave the artwork a cleaner, more contemporary presentation that was generally well-received by players looking for better readability and a refreshed visual identity.
