Provenance

Where it came from

Rootwalla first appeared in the Stronghold expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 1998, designed as a green creature that could temporarily boost its own power and toughness for a mana cost. This mechanic, colloquially known as 'fire-breathing' when applied to green creatures, allowed the card to function as a versatile threat that could punish opponents for leaving their defenses down during a game.

The Ninth Edition printing, released in 2005, brought this creature back as part of the core set's effort to provide stable, recognizable staples for newer players. Roger Raupp illustrated this version, maintaining the creature’s established identity as a hulking, reptilian beast of the forest. The card was well-regarded during its tenure in core sets for its straightforward utility and its role as a classic example of green's color-pie focus on raw physical growth.
