Where it came from
Seat of the Synod was originally released in the 2003 Mirrodin set, introducing the 'artifact land' mechanic to Magic: The Gathering. This specific printing comes from the 2004 World Championship Decks, which were pre-constructed replicas of the decks used by the top players at the 2004 World Championship. These decks served as a way for the general public to experience the high-level competitive strategies of the era, offering a snapshot of the metagame dominated by artifact-heavy synergies.
The card features artwork by Mike Dringenberg, a notable comic book artist known for his work on The Sandman. Dringenberg’s design for the Mirrodin cycle of artifact lands aimed to convey the metallic, artificial nature of the plane of Mirrodin. The card's aesthetic was well-received for its stark, industrial look, which fit perfectly into a block defined by its mechanical and artifact-focused gameplay. Inclusion in the World Championship Decks solidified its status as a staple of that competitive season.
