Provenance

Where it came from

Seat of the Synod was originally introduced in the 2003 Mirrodin expansion as one of the cycle of artifact lands. These cards were designed to represent the metallic landscape of the plane of Mirrodin, where metal is the primary material of the world. Mechanically, they serve as both basic lands and artifacts, a dual nature that has made them significant and controversial in various competitive formats throughout Magic: The Gathering's history.

The Commander 2016 version, collector number 323, features the original atmospheric art by Mike Dringenberg. His illustration captures the industrial, surreal aesthetic of the Vedalken-governed Synod in the capital city of Lumengrid. While the card's visual design remains consistent with its Mirrodin roots, its inclusion in the Commander 2016 product helped broaden accessibility to these utility lands for players engaging in the multiplayer Commander format.
