Where it came from
Sedgemoor Witch was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to embody the aesthetic and mechanical identity of the Witherbloom college, one of the five magical houses at the game's titular university, which focuses on the intersection of life and death magic.
The artwork was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent artist within the Magic community known for her expressive character work. Villeneuve sought to depict the Witch as a powerful, somber figure reflecting the swamp-themed, gothic atmosphere of Witherbloom. Upon release, the card saw significant competitive play due to its synergy with token-generation strategies, earning it a reputation as a resilient and efficient threat in various formats.
